Best Performing Shelters & Rescues

The Good News:
While all animal shelters and rescues that achieve Live Release Rates (LRR) of over 90% are doing at least some things very well, those that perform at this level are doing many things well. Achieving save rates this high demonstrates a clear commitment to treating every life as one worth saving and have implemented the programs needed, or, in the very least, have the leadership in place to ensure staff is doing all they can.

The Other News:
Organizations performing at this level often (but not always) have a handful of key staff and volunteers who do the majority of the heavy-lifting and who work tirelessly to ensure lives are saved. Care needs to be taken to ensure these people do not burn out. If the organization perceives this may be an issue, care should be taken to help these staff and volunteers to develop better work/life balance, while helping to spread the workload around.

What Others Can Do:
Boards of directors, government officials, busnesses and others in the community should reward organizations achieving this level of success with great support, including but not limited to, financial support. Money is important and the work cannot be done without it, but emotional and spiritual support are important, too. Organizations, and the people in them making this life-saving happen, deserve recognition, support and continued encouragement.

Suggestion: Special Attention for High Energy Dogs

Watch: Biking with Shelter Dogs

One category of savable dogs is usually one of the last - if not the last - sets of animals to be saved: Large, high-energy, boisterous dogs that do not do well sitting in animal shelters. There are several approaches that can help, including coordination with biking or running groups, or other efforts to connect active dogs with active people. These efforts not only help get badly needed time for these animals outside of their kennels, they help the dogs to meet the kinds of families that are their best-fits for adoption.
